Melvin J. Taylor “Mel” died Monday, November 1st at 12:35 PM. Mel is survived by his nephews Craig Patterson, Lynn Taylor & his niece Donna Patterson. Mel was born in Baltimore, MD the 2nd of October, 1921. At 19 Mel began a lifetime career with the Glen L. Martin Co. / Lockheed Martin as the company rep evaluating carrier suitability of the B 26 for the Doolittle Raid. Arriving in England Mel served as Technical Representative for the B 26 Marauder attached to the 9th Bomber Command, 9th Air Force. He crossed the Channel in an LST with his "little English car" landing on the continent at Omaha Beach shortly after the invasion, where he was attached to the 98th Combat Wing where he coordinated activities with the other Martin Reps attached to the other bomb groups. After the war Mel was involved in the development of many of GLM’s early missile programs. Mel retired from Lockheed Martin after 45 years of service in 1984. An avid fisherman, you could often find him with friends fishing "Mosquito Lagoon". A celebration of Mel’s life will be held at The Mayflower Retirement Community, 1620 Mayflower Ct., Winter Park, FL on Thursday, November 16th at 2 PM.
