Melvin Lee Newton, known to his friends and family as “Big Man,” received his angel wings on June 24, 2017, at his home surrounded by family. He was born on June 10, 1941, in Buckner, Arkansas to the parentage of Maggie Taylor and Wallace Newton.



He received his formal education at Oak Grove High School. He met and married Massie Lisa Williams in June 14, 1979. Melvin worked in sales the majority of his life. He lived in Dallas, Texas, for over forty years. He could be found enjoying his western movies and his favorite football team playing on T.V., and listening to the blues. He loved playing checkers and dominoes.



He was preceded in death by his parents, Maggie Taylor and Wallace Newton; brother, Elmer Newton; and son, Cleo Brown, Jr.



Melvin is survived by his wife, Massie Newton of Dallas, Texas; children, Shawna Watts (Lorenzo) of Dallas, Texas, and Debra Newton Pattillo (Warren) Kansas City, Missouri; grandchildren, La-Taysha Randle, Rashad Brown, Montoya Pattillo and Tara Strickland; great-grandchild, Kennedy Rucker; siblings, Hollis Newton of Dallas, Texas, Bruce Newton of Houston, Texas, Jessie Newton of St. Louis, Missouri, and Vera Newton Elston of California; and a host of relatives and friends.
