COLUMBIA - A graveside service for SFC Melvin Wesley McDill, U.S. Army, (Ret.), 77, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 2, 2017, in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.



Mr. McDill passed away Friday, January 27, 2017. Born on April 28, 1939 in Escanaba, Michigan, he was a son of the late Melvin James McDill and Fern Omeline Champine McDill.



Melvin served in the U.S. Army in the Berlin Brigade and in the Korean Demilitarized Zone. After retirement he served as a City of Columbia Police Officer. After working for the police department, he taught word processing and administration at SSi 369th AG Battalion Admin School at Fort Jackson. He was a wonderful husband and father. Melvin loved reading, woodworking, and history.



Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Margaret E. Appelt McDill of Columbia; John Appelt McDill of Columbia; sister, Judy Eilene Strickland of Atlanta, Georgia; two nieces; and other family members. He will be missed by his dog, Lulu.
