Merlyn, the fourth of five children born to the late Ada Williams Broaddus and Merle Hubert Broaddus, was born on March 3, 1940, in Luray, Virginia, where her formative years were spent and her relationship with God began when she united with the Bethel Baptist Church at an early age. She attended the Andrew Jackson Consolidated School until 1957, when the family relocated to Washington, DC where she graduated with honors from McKinley Technical High School in June of 1958.

Merlyn was a stay-at-home wife for several years, only working part time positions so that she could devote time to raising her children. When her children started school, she volunteered to chauffer senior citizens who were in need of transportation to doctor appointments, to go shopping or needed a ride to church. She was employed by the C&P Telephone Company for three years. In 1977, she started working full time for the Manassas City Schools. She was initially employed as a Title I Bookkeeper at Baldwin Elementary School. Later she was promoted to the position of Special Education Secretary in the Central Office. Her last position was with the Food Services Department. She retired in 2010, after 33 years with the Manassas City Public Schools.

Merlyn is survived by Gene, her loving husband of 58 years; their son, Kevin and daughter, April Fitzgerald (James). There are seven grandchildren: Xavier, Matthew and Brandeon Maloy; Whitney Nixon (Nick), Terrell, Jasmine and Jada Fitzgerald and one great granddaughter, Samyah Fitzgerald. She leaves two sisters, Janice Glover of Hyattsville, MD and Mary Ann Brooking (Daniel) of Washington, DC. Her two brothers, Edward and Melvyn preceded her in death. Other survivors include one sister-in-law, Paulette Rucker of Manassas; two nieces, Michelle Rucker of Manassas, and Dr. Rhea Brooking-Dixon (Jason) of Falls Church, VA and two nephews, Derek Rucker of Manassas and David Brooking of Washington, DC; two maternal aunts, Lucy Hunter of Erie, PA, Margaret King of Luray, VA and one paternal aunt, Inez Veney also of Luray. There are four very special God Sisters: Juanita Willis of Washington, DC; Mary Spriggs of Front Royal, VA; Mattie Smiley and Willie Haughton of Manassas. She also leaves to cherish her memory many "adopted" family members: a son Edward Fitzgerald (Frances), and grandchildren Natalie King, Ashton Jones, Jacinta Lane and Melani French. She also leaves numerous cousins and friends.
