STAINTON, Merrel Barr, 77, of Tampa, passed into the arms of the Lord on March 25, 2017. The son of Alfred and Dorothy Stainton, he was born December 31, 1939 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was raised primarily in Tampa and attended H.B. Plant High School, graduating in 1958. He was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1962 and a Law Degree in 1965 from the University of Florida, and during his collegiate career was President of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity and a member of Florida Blue Key. He practiced law in Tampa most of his adult life, having been in private practice on his own and with Carlton, Fields, P.A., and in public service on two occasions with the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office. He was for several terms an officer and board member in the Hillsborough County Bar Association, and was also the recipient of the Red McEwen Award, given to the outstanding young attorney in Hillsborough County. Merrel was a passionate Gator football fan and was also very involved in local, state and federal politics, having participated in and directed numerous political campaigns over the years. He was a past member of the Tampa Yacht & Country Club and the Merrymakers Club, where he also served on the board of directors. Many of his oldest friends affectionately referred to him by his fraternity nickname, “Guppy”, and he could not traverse Tampa without seeing at least a handful of people he knew. Merrel was an active member of Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church and was proud of his participation in the Stephens Ministries program there. He also took great pride in his three sons and had a strong faith in God. In his later years, Merrel retired to South Tampa Health and Rehabilitation in Tampa. Merrel was pre-deceased by his parents, and by his sister, Claudia Stainton Walker. He is survived by his sons, Christopher Stainton (Michelle), William Merrel Stainton (Joanne), and LaMarcus “Mark” Stainton (Allison); his grandchildren, Kayla Stainton, William Edwards Stainton, and Katherine Stainton; and his nieces, Dodie Bailey, of Savannah, Ga., and Kellie Herlong, of Greer, SC. A memorial service will be held at Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church, 3501 W. San Jose Street, Tampa, Florida, on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends following the service at The Merrymakers Club, 124 Danube Avenue. Pallbearers are Christopher Stainton, William M. Stainton, Mark Stainton, Donald Boone (cousin), David Boone (cousin) and Fred Frankland (lifelong friend). Arrangements are being handled by Blount & Curry. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church or a charity of choice.
