Dr. Michael B. Ballard passed away Tuesday evening, October 11, 2016, in his home library in Ackerman, MS.

Dr. Ballard was born on November 24, 1946 in Choctaw County, the eldest son of Ottis B. and Jessie Dola Ballard. He was proud to be a sixth generation Mississippian, proud to be a published Civil War historian, proud to have gotten all of his degrees at Mississippi State University, proud to have been the University Archivist and Director of the MSU Congressional and Political Collection, proud to have married a Yankee (much to everyone's surprise), proud to be a member, teacher, and deacon at the Ackerman Baptist Church, and proudest of all to be a man of God.

Funeral Services for Dr. Ballard will be held on Monday October 17, 2016 at 11 AM at Ackerman Baptist Church in Ackerman, MS. Interment will follow in the Old Lebanon Presbyterian Cemetery in Choctaw County near Ackerman, MS. Visitation will be held Sunday October 16, 2016 from 5PM until 8 PM at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS and one hour prior to the service at Ackerman Baptist Church on Monday October 17, 2016. Coleman Funeral Home of Ackerman, MS is in charge of all arrangements.

Michael is survived by his wife, Jan Rodgers Ballard, originally from Illinois, and his step-children, Eric Ewalt (Mindy and Erin Ewalt, plus three granddaughters, Alex Ewalt, Addison Ewalt, and Andera Ewalt. He is also survived by a brother, John Christopher Ballard (Alice) of Raymond, MS and three nieces: April Ballard Markon, Celeste Ballard Dastrup, and Melody Ballard and their spouses and children.

If people wish to give to a memorial, there are two which would have been dear to Mike's heart. One would be the Ackerman Baptist Church, where he absolutely loved to serve, and the other is the "Michael B. Ballard Memorial Fund." This has been set up through the Mississippi State Universtiy Foundation and will provide travel grants for visiting scholars to possibly go toward a "Michael B. Ballard Lecture." If giving to the second fund, checks should be mailed to the USGA, P.O. Box 5408, Mississippi State, MS 39762
