Michael F. "Big Ernie" Gillespie, 63, of Manchester-by-the-Sea, formerly of Magnolia, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at his home. Born in Beverly on January 6, 1952, he was the son of the late John C. and Dorothy A. (Hanson) Gillespie. Michael was a graduate of Gloucester High School with the Class of 1970. To those who knew him, he seemed larger than life but a gentle giant. He enjoyed a special relationship with his sister Noreen who helped care for him in his later years. He many times called her his Guardian Angel. He will be missed by all that knew him. He is survived by his devoted sister Noreen Gilliss and her husband Brad of Magnolia; his brother Robert Gillespie and his wife Judith of Melbourne, FL.; his niece Jennifer Jacobs and her husband Jason and their sons Ryan and Noah; nephews, David Gilliss of Gloucester, Michael Gillespie and his son Asa of Salem, MA, Matthew Gillespie of Beverly, David Gillespie and his wife Leah and their children Hunter, Olivia and Curtis of Spring Hill, FL. There are no visiting hours. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made in his name to the Magnolia Library, One Lexington Ave., Gloucester, MA 01930. Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester.
