Michael "Mike" John Gerrets, Sr. entered peacefully into eternal rest on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Devoted husband of Cyleria Guidry Gerrets and his former wife Elizabeth "Judy" Wilson and a loving father of Michele Gerrets Berger (Daniel), Michael John Gerrets, Jr., Jeanne M. Valladares (Arnald II) and Leander B. Morgan IV (Amanda). A proud grandfather of Daniel, Jr., Virginia (Byron, Jr.), Frank, Brittni, Nikolas, Kaili, Elaina, Brooke, Baylee, Austin, Leander V and great grandchildren; Josilyn, Landon, Abigail and Sebastian.
Son of the late Shirley Holden Gerrets and Charles N. Gerrets. Brother of Helen Ferrari, Charlene Hanson, Albert "Jerry" Gerrets, Patricia Gerrets, Nellie Gerrets and preceded in death by his siblings; Charles Gerrets, Jr., Leonard Gerrets, Melvin Gerrets, Debbie Wellman, Francis Gerrets. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and his furry babies; Gertie and the late Rags and Major.
Age 72, a native of Algiers, Louisiana and a lifelong resident of Gretna, Louisiana. "Mike" retired from the Board of Commissioners Port of New Orleans as a Marine Chief Engineer aboard the Fire Tug "Deluge", many other vessels throughout the country and including Boomtown Casino. He also served Jefferson Parish and the City of Westwego as a reserve police officer with the rank of Major. He was the patriarch of the family and always lived his life on his own terms.
After his retirement he enjoyed traveling and mainly just being with family and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at Westside Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 5101 Westbank Expy., Marrero, LA on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 11:00 am.
Visitation on Friday, July 7, 2017 beginning at 6:00 pm and again on Saturday from 9:00 am until Mass time. Interment following in St. Bartholomew Cemetery, 500 De Armas St. , Algiers, Louisiana.
