Loving husband, beloved father, cherished friend, and loyal union brother Michael Lynn Grawl, 63 years old, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2017 at 4:15am, surrounded by his family. Michael was a lifelong Houstonian, born to Hilda Mae Hagerty Grawl and Leroy Grawl on December 4, 1953. He graduated from Milby High School, class of 1972. He married Deidre Grohgan on May 22, 1982 at St. Christopher Catholic Church, which he attended throughout the first half of his life. He lived in the Houston Heights with his family for the past 35 years. Michael will be remembered for his generous spirit, unique sense of humor, and willingness to help every person he met.

Since 1995, Michael worked as the house carpenter at the Wortham Theatre, creating behind-the-scenes magic for countless performances for Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera, and other arts organizations and road shows. He toured around the world with the Houston Ballet, as an assistant carpenter and head carpenter. He began working as a stagehand in 1976 and since 1979, has been a proud member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Local 51. Michael was a dedicated member of his local, serving many terms as Vice-President and delegate to the International Convention. He enjoyed sharing backstage secrets of the Wortham with visitors and helped encourage a love of theatre arts with generations of children.

Michael was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church for more than 30 years. He served as an usher, assisted with alms, and was actively involved with the Men of St. Andrew's.

Michael - also known as Big Grawl, the Moose, and Ice Tea Mike - is preceded in death by his parents and his older brother John. He is survived by his wife, Deidre, his daughters, Rebecca and Katie, his son-in-law Matt, his brother Greg, and his sisters, Melinda and Leslie, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, family members, friends, and colleagues.

A memorial service and celebration of life for Michael will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in the Heights on Saturday, December 9th at 9:30am. A catered reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Michael Grawl Scholarship Fund (c/o IATSE Local 51, 3030 Northwest Freeway, Houston, TX 77009), a special scholarship that was established in his honor. Contributions to Texas AFL-CIO Scholarship Fund (Texas AFL-CIO Headquarters, 1106 Lavaca Street #200, Austin, TX 78701) in Michael's honor or Houston Hospice (or Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, TX, 77030) also appreciated.

The family extends its sincere appreciation to the staff of Houston Hospice, for making Michael's final stage of life peaceful and comfortable. His memory will live on and he will never be forgotten.
