Michael Nicholas Vucina, 87, died peacefully at home in Pacific Grove, CA, surrounded by family on July 29, 2017. Mike is survived by his wife of 61 years Anne G. Vucina, his five children Cindy L. Kubica (Stan), Julie A. Vucina-Higgs (Ron), Michael N. Vucina Jr. (Lucy), Mark A. Vucina (Diana) and Scott M. Vucina (Ilka), 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and his sister Katie Stark. He is preceded in death by his brother John Vucina.

Mike was born on January 17, 1930, in Monterey, CA, to John and Ana Vucina, immigrants from Croatia who made their home in Monterey. Mike graduated from Monterey High School in 1948 where he held the high jump record for over 30 years. Before entering the military, he was an amateur light heavyweight boxer with an 18-0 record. He was drafted into the army in 1950 to fight in the Korean War. He was wounded in battle at Heartbreak Ridge. During the battle, several concussion grenades left his body riddled with shrapnel. He received the Purple Heart for his service and bravery.

Mike returned from war to Monterey where he met and married Anne. They lived and raised their family in Pacific Grove, CA. Mike was a working partner at the Del Mar French Laundry for over 50 years where he never missed a day of work. Mike was a loving family man who taught all five children the importance of hard work. He brought

them, starting at the age of six, to the laundry to fold hotel towels on the weekends. Mike was an avid fan of the Giants, 49ers and Warriors and enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports. He enjoyed the many trips he took around the world with Anne, especially their trip to his parents' homeland of Croatia. His family and friends will always remember him as a generous and hardworking man.

The family would like to thank Gary Grant, M.D., and the loving caregivers Daisha and Emma for the comfort and care they gave Mike at the end of his life.

A memorial service will be held at The Paul Mortuary, 390 Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove, CA. on Thursday August 3, 2017 at 2 p.m. After the service, family and friends are invited to celebrate Mike's life at the home of his son Mark Vucina, 450 Beaumont Avenue, Pacific Grove, CA.
