Mildred Elizabeth (Lilly) Churley, 94, passed away in Lincoln, Nebraska on June 14, 2017 from Alzheimer's complications.

She was born July 4, 1922 to John and Hedvig (Aas) Lilly in Jersey City, NJ and was baptized on December 10, 1922 at the Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran Trinity Church in Jersey City, New Jersey. She grew up in Jamaica, NY and was confirmed on May 31, 1936 at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation. Her confirmation verse was I John 3:18. (KJV: "My little children, let us love not in word, neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth.") She graduated in 1939 from John Adams High School at the top of her class.

Mildred married George Churley on July 31, 1943 at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Jamaica, N.Y. They made an excellent ballroom dancing couple, a pastime they enjoyed for decades. Their marriage was blessed with a daughter and a son. In 1955 the family moved to Mentor, Ohio where Mildred worked for the Willoughby-Eastlake Public School System in the Pupil Personnel Department. In 1969 she was offered the position of Personal Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools but had to turn it down as she and her husband were about to relocate to Troy, Ohio.

During her 34 years living in Troy, Mildred was active as a hospital volunteer. She also visited elderly shut-ins. She and her husband were long-time, active members of First Lutheran Church in Troy. In 2004, Mildred and George moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where they became members at Southwood Lutheran Church. Throughout her life, Mildred was a faithful Christian.

Mildred was a two-time breast cancer survivor. She was preceded in death by her husband (2010), her parents, and her sisters Ruth Cawein and Alice Magness.

Those who celebrate her life and mourn her passing include her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Douglas Meilander of Parkville, MD; son and daughter-in-law, George M. and JoAnn Churley (Lincoln); grandchildren Rebecca (Jason) Christenson (Lincoln), Karen (Andrei) Yelovich (Baltimore, MD), Nancy (Victor) Lin (Gaithersburg, MD), Laura (Christopher Zarate) Meilander (New York, NY), and Benjamin Churley (Madison, WI); great-grandchildren Jack, Norah and George Henry Christenson, Alexander and Stephanie Yelovich, and Eliana and Katriella Lin; four nieces and two nephews.
