Mildred Louise Self went home to the Lord on Monday, October 23, 2017 at North Care Hospice House surrounded and blanketed by the love of her family.

Mildred was born on May 6, 1936 to her parents Charles and Helen (Polston) Lawrence. She grew up in Moberly, MO with two brothers and two sisters. After graduating high school, Mildred trained to become an LPN. She worked in the operating room at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. She met her husband, Glenn Leroy Self at a barn dance in Kirksville in 1956 and they married June 2, 1957. They raised three children in Claycomo where they made their home for more than 40 years.

Mildred loved her family beyond measure, deeply and unconditionally. She was tireless in her care and compassion for her loved ones. Her greatest joy was when family came together on special occasions to share a meal and to share stories. Her faith was a source of great strength. She was proud to be a charter member of North Star United Methodist Church in Liberty.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, and her daughter, Beth. She is survived by her brother Bill Lawrence and his wife Irene and her sister Karen Lawrence. She is also survived by her children Chuck Self and his wife Ann, and Joe Self and his wife Ziva; grandchildren Billy Self, Jarrod Self, Ashley Self and Travis Self and his wife Krissie; and one great-grandson, Parker Self.

The family would like to thank the staff of Westbrook Care Center in Kearney, MO where she made her home for the past three and a half years, and also the staff and caregivers at North Care Hospice House.

A service to celebrate the life of Mildred Self will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 25, 2017 graveside at White Chapel Cemetery, 6600 NE Antioch Road, Gladstone, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice Foundation, 1500 Meadow Lake Parkway, Suite 200, Kansas City, MO 64114.
