Pickens – Geraldine Fortune Masters, 80, wife of the late Claude B. Masters, passed from this life on Tuesday January 9, 2018.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Lee and Ellie Mae Harrison Fortune. Geraldine was a graduate of Central Wesleyan Academy and of Southern Wesleyan University. She taught school at West End in Easley, SC, worked for 27 years at Hephzibah Children’s Home in Macon, GA and worked at SWU in Central, SC before retiring.

While at Hephzibah, Geraldine became very close to Shirley Locklear, a girl growing up in the children’s home. After leaving Hephzibah, Shirley became like an adopted daughter to Geraldine. Later when Shirley married David Duncan, they both were her children and their daughters Jamie, Aimee, and Halley became her granddaughters and their children became her great grandchildren.

When Geraldine married C.B. Masters in 1995, she became the step-mother of Martha “Marti” Carter (Harry) and the step grandmother to Shawn Carter (Richelle), Casey Carter (Miranda), Cassie Clark (Stephen), and Isaac Carter (Maria) and later on to nine great grandchildren. Also Geraldine loved her many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Surviving is her sister, Dorothy Lewis.

Geraldine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Helen, and four brothers, Melvin, Calvin, Grady, and David.

The family will receive friends Saturday at Dillard Funeral Home from 11:30 AM to 12:45 PM. A service will be held 1 PM in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family requests flowers be omitted and memorials be may be made to Pickens View Wesleyan Church, 744 Bethlehem Ridge Rd, Pickens, SC 29671 or to Hephzibah Children’s Home, 6601 Zebulon Road, Macon, GA 31220.
