Mona Jean (Johnson) Smith was born November 3, 1929, in Rush Springs, Okla., the only daughter of Monroe and Wilma (Willoughby) Johnson. She joined her parents and five brothers in following work around Oklahoma and Colorado, picking cotton, and learning to cook and sew and make just about anything out of scraps. The family settled in Middleberg, OK, long enough for high school and, with scholarships and work, Jean went on to the Oklahoma College for Women and UCO. She taught at a one-room school in Boone, then later at elementary schools in Oklahoma and California. Jean met Wayne Arthur Smith at a boarding house and they married in 1952; they had three children and made their home in Oklahoma City for most of the next sixty years. Jean was involved in school, church, Scouts and Camp Fire with her children, then later activities with her grandchildren. After Wayne's death in 2013, Jean continued to live in the family home.
Jean died December 26, 2016, in Oklahoma City. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Gwen, and Bart and Sherri; a daughter, Twila; two granddaughters and their spouses, Jennifer and Josh Hamilton, and Heather and Brandon Bell; and three great-grandchildren, Aiden, Connor, and Emma. A Memorial Service will be at Hahn-Cook/Street and Draper Funeral Directors, 6600 Broadway Ext., Oklahoma City, on Saturday, December 31, at 10 a.m.
