COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Lt. Col. Monte Darrel McGovern, U.S. Army (Ret.), 74, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 16, 2017 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 15, 2017 at the funeral home.

Mr. McGovern passed away Friday, October 13, 2017. Born on July 10, 1943 in Bloomington, California, he was a son of the late John Charles McGovern and Stella Quinn McGovern.

Monte graduated with a B.S. from the University of South Carolina. He served in the U.S. Army for two tours during the Vietnam War, in Germany for two years with the “Turner Tankers” as the wall was coming up, and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He later retired from Anchor Continental Tape as a production supervisor. Monte was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, where he was the Quartermaster. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and taking them to historical sites. He loved racing dirt track cars, NASCAR and fishing.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Jackie McGovern; sons, Todd McGovern of Prosperity and Jack McGovern (Cindy) of Little Mountain; daughter, Tammy Stonehill (Paul) of Columbia; grandchildren, Jack McGovern, Jr. (Rachel) of Hartsville, Devin McGovern of Little Mountian, Dillon McGovern of Little Mountain, Kristine Eppink (Thomas) of Lexington, Samantha Stonehill of Columbia, and Kaitlyn Stonehill of Columbia.
