COLUMBIA - Margaret Mozelle McNair Shipp, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017. For 97 years she radiated love, a strong Christian faith, and a positive spirit, teaching, touching and inspiring generations.

She was born May 24, 1920. She was the third child of Bertha Elmira Atkinson and James Valentine McNair. A native Columbian, she graduated from Columbia High School and attended Columbia Business College. She married Woodrow Singleton Shipp and they had three children: Woody (Sonny), Dottie, and Sharon.

She taught kindergarten and ran the afternoon recreational program at Mays Park. Next to her family and her church, that was her love. She started as a kindergarten teacher with forty four and five-year-olds in a class with one assistant. The school was so popular that for several years they had to run double sessions. In the afternoon recreational program, she mentored all ages. Those who came will remember the ping-pong, fore-par, bridge, softball and basketball games as well as the knitting lessons, day- camps and dancing around the maypole. For several years the boys’ basketball team won the city championship. During her career, she reached thousands of young people through both the kindergarten program and the afternoon recreational program. In 1989, many of the young people she had mentored held a reunion at Mays Park, where they had the picnic shelter dedicated and named in her honor. In 2005, Mrs. Shipp was invited to the A.C. Flora Reunion as an honored guest. At that reunion, the idea of a scholarship in her honor was established. In 2015, many of the same people came together to celebrate her 95th birthday. During retirement she enjoyed traveling, the beach, tennis, bridge, and water aerobics.

She is survived by her daughters, Dorothy Hogan (John) and Sharon Derham (John); grandchildren, Dolores Derham Long (Beau), and Allen Derham; great-grandchildren, Jack, Henry and Margaret Long; and sister-in-law, Lois McNair. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow S. Shipp Sr.; son, Woodrow (Sonny) Shipp Jr.; and siblings, James E. McNair, Dorothy M. Gordon, Marjorie M. LeGoff, Rev. Carl Webster (Jack) McNair and Loomis (Lin) McNair.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 20,2017 at St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, where she was a charter member and a devoted member of the Daughters of the King. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Memorials may be made to the St. Martin’s Foundation, 5220 Clemson Avenue, Columbia, S. C. 29206; The Mozelle Shipp Scholarship Fund, Central Carolina Community Foundation, 2711 Middleburg Dr., Suite 213, Columbia SC, 29204; or Meals on Wheels 2817 Millwood Ave. Columbia S. C., 29205.

The family would like to thank neighbors and friends, Fred Roper, Jon Upson, Doris and Jim Howie, and April Samol for their kind help and support that allowed her to live out her years in her own home.
