N. Carter Poe III died Friday, April 28, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary McCalla Poe. He is also survived by five children, Millie Poe Hilemon, Ellen Poe Narayan (Shankar), Susan Poe Pang (Willett), Wilkins Carter Poe (Kyongcha) and Mary Poe Sanders (Scott) as well as twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his sister, Elisabeth Poe Henderson (Mrs W.T Henderson).





Mr Poe, the son of William Wilkins Poe and Belle Eskew Poe, was born in Greenville, SC, on November 17, 1922. He graduated from Greenville High School ,class of 1940. After serving during WWII in New Guinea, he completed his BS in mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. Mr. Poe was Vice President/Treasurer of the Poe Corporation, which began as Poe Hardware on Main Street in the late 1800’s. He retired in 1987. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he previously served as an elder. He also was a charter member of St Giles Presbyterian Church. Mr Poe was active throughout his life in the Greenville Rotary Club, through which he and his wife hosted many international students. He served on the board of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce , Family and Children Services, Carolina Youth Symphony, Easter Seal Society as well as many others. He was also a member of the Cotillion club and The St .Andrews Society. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.





Graveside Services will be held Sunday, May 7, at 2 pm, in Springwood Cemetery, Greenville, SC. The family will be at the home following the service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your charity of choice.
