Nancy McLaurin Shannon Drew, age 83, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at Morningside Assisted Living in Raleigh. She was born on April 29, 1934 in Meridian, Mississippi to Julian and Emma (Sanders) Shannon. Nancy was a graduate of Furman University with a degree in English and minors in music and education. On February 11, 1956 she married Thomas C. Drew III.

Nancy worked in the Wake County School system for over 27 years as a guidance counselor at Millbrook High School, Daniels Middle School, and North Garner Middle School. During this time she also earned a Masters degree from North Carolina State University in Guidance and Counseling. She was a dedicated educator and was devoted to her students she counseled. She initiated a Peer Counseling Program as Director of Guidance at Millbrook High School that has evolved into a county-wide Peer Discovery Program. She served on the board of trustees for Wake Teen Medical Services and for Crossnore School. She also served as Guidance Supervisor and Wake County Schools Central Office Coordinator of the Statewide Dropout prevention Pilot Program. Nancy was an active member of the DAR with over 50 years of service, a past Regent of Caswell-Nash Chapter, and a state officer. She also served for many years as the Senior President of the CAR Joel Lane Society in Raleigh. Nancy was a devoted and active member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church. She served in many capacities including: UMW Circle Chairman, Administrative Board member, Sunday School 2nd and 3rd grade Teacher, Chairman of the Commission on Education, Chancel Choir, Scholarship Committee, Acolyte Committee of the Altar Guild, Hand Bell Ringers, and a Prayer Warrior.

She was dedicated to her family and especially to her grandchildren who knew her as Nana. She is survived by her husband Thomas; sons Thomas (Sheila) and Julian (Mika); grandchildren Christopher (Rachel), Elizabeth, Jules, and Ella; a great grandchild Lily; a sister Katherine (Thomas) DeVenny; sister-in-law Twila Drew; nieces Katherine Booker, Anne O'Sullivan, Debbie Streett; and nephew Alston DeVenny.

The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Morningside Assisted Living for their professional and loving care for Nancy.

A visitation will be held on Friday, August 25, 2017 from 5:00-7:00pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh. Funeral Services will be held at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at 11:00am.
