Neil F. Murphy of Airmont, New York, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. He was 76 years old.

Neil is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of 49 years, their eight children: Michael of Astoria, NY; Brian of Haverstraw, NY; Douglas of Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ; Neil of Ridgewood, NJ; Courtney of Mahwah, NJ; Jennifer of Westfield, NJ; Matthew of Ramsey, NJ and Jeanne Marie of Wayne, NJ; fifteen grandchildren; and sisters Maureen Nolan of West Chester, PA and Patricia Stodd of West Palm Beach, FL.

Neil was born on September 7, 1940 in Queens, NY to Charles and Katherine Murphy. He graduated from Power Memorial Academy, New York, NY, in 1958, St. Anselm's College, Manchester, NH, in 1963 and St. John's University Law School, Brooklyn, NY, in 1966.

Neil began his legal career as a part-time employee in the New York City Law Department Library while attending law school. In 1969 he began a long and distinguished career as an attorney, initially with the Practice and Claims Division of the Corporation Counsel's office. He moved to the Department of General Services in 1971 and was promoted to General Counsel of that agency in 1974, a position he held until 1996, when he became General Counsel of the newly created Department of Design and Construction. Neil retired from City service in 2000.

As a lawyer, Neil was regarded as someone with a unique ability to be an effective advocate without alienating those who disagreed with his position. As a man, his identity was shaped by his commitment to family.

Visitation will be held at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Route 59, Suffern, NY, on Thursday, April 20, 2017 from 7-9PM and Friday, April 21, 2017 from 2-4PM and 7-9PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 11AM at Sacred Heart Church, 129 Lafayette Avenue, Suffern, NY. Burial follows at Ascension Cemetery, 650 Saddle River Road, Airmont NY.
