Nicholas John Zuras, a 40-year resident of Annapolis, died peacefully April 24 at his home.

Nick was born on July 9, 1918, to John and Amelia Zuras, immigrants of Greece. He graduated from East Carolina University with a BA in History and quarter-backed the football team in 1941 to the school’s only un-defeated season. He served in WWII as a lieutenant, commanding a 7-man crew (LCSS) rocket boat at Omaha Beach and in the invasion of Southern France. He also fought in the Pacific front at the Battle of Okinawa. In 1950, he married his beloved, Mary Zuras. He taught history and coached football and basketball at Sherwood High School in Montgomery County, and later was employed as a sales representative for Capitol City. Nick was very active well into his nineties, enjoying tennis, gym workouts, sailing, and spending time with family and grandchildren. His enthusiasm for life inspired many.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary M. Zuras, sister, Marie Z. Harris, and brother, George J. Zuras. Nick is survived by two daughters, Barbara Zuras (Richard C. Neuhoff) of Avon, CT and Amelia Heffernan of Arnold; and five grandchildren, Megan, Daniel, Nick, Rachel, and Kate. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 16 at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Children’s Defense Fund http://www.childrensdefense.org/ or Blue Ridge Adaptive Snow Sports (BRASS) https://www.brasski.org/.
