Nora Mae Vehar, age 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by her beloved children on Monday, December 11, 2017. She was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1925 arriving as a birthday gift to her father, Cloyce McKernan, also a Christmas baby, and Alice May (Sisk) McKernan. She lived with her parents and younger brother, Clayton in Detroit, Michigan. At the age of 10, while spying on a safety boy named Bob, she proclaimed the love of her life and future husband, Robert Vehar. Nora and Bob where happily married in September 1944 and celebrated more than 65 years of married life living in both Michigan and Florida. Together they had 5 children which were the heartbeat of their life. Nothing filled her joy to overflowing more than having all of her children and grandchildren under one roof together as family.

Nora's smile and illuminating sweetness would light up any room or individual in her presence. She lovingly embraced everyone she met with a welcome smile and conversation. Equal to her sweetness was her adventurous side and outgoing personality. Whether it was a social gathering to play cards with close friends, hanging out with the wives while Bob's band played music on a Friday or Saturday night to entertaining a large group at the condo, one could always find Nora lighting up the night with good conversation, contagious laughter and gracious hosting. Fishing, boating or stomping through the woods in Northern Michigan enlightened her natural side along with gardening, raising chickens and enjoying her many Springer Spaniel dogs, all named Chipsie. She found adventure on the high seas cruising with her Otter Key friends, skydiving at 75 and 4-wheel riding at 85. Nora found joy in the big and small things of life.

Nora had a serious side as well. Actively participating in the Lapeer County Extension Group, returning to school in her 50s to complete her Associate's degree, running for Almont township clerk, a published genealogist, political activist and proponent of women's rights. She made her mark for herself and others to come.

Nora's strength and courage came from a depth of faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She would often express the peace and joy of His presence as well as the Word of God as her armor and ammunition for life. When faced with life challenges that appeared as an insurmountable mountain, she would say she placed herself in His Chariot of Love and He would always carry her over the mountain to the other side. He never failed her.

Nora is survived by her children, Donna, Carol, Kim, Kevin and Kyle; 5 grandchildren; Tom Jr., Pamela, Stephen, Mikaela, Philip and Lauren; 5 great-grandchildren; Maddie, Cassidy, Michael, Austin and Marcie. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cloyce & Alice, husband, Bob, brother, Clay, and grandson, Tim.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 15, 2017 at Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home Winter Garden, Florida with viewing from 10:00 - 11:00am, followed by a Celebration of Life Service from 11:00-11:30am. Burial services will be at 1:00pm at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.

Nora will be remembered as a bright, shining light with the sweetest smile.

Enjoy singing "alleluia" in or out of key throughout all eternity Nora Mae. You are truly loved.
