LCDR (ret.) Norbert Frederick Leckband II, of Pensacola, Florida, passed away Monday, January 15, 2018. He was born in Arlington Heights, IL in 1933 and spent from 1936 to 1942 in India as a child on a medical mission. He was an outstanding high school athlete who lettered 12 times in several sports and held the record as State Champion in wrestling for many years. He joined the Navy in 1956 and had a distinguished 20-year career as a Naval Aviator. He served with distinction in Vietnam. His naval career was notable for flying both attack and fighter jets, among others, and serving as a flight instructor. He was a lifetime athlete, winning multiple awards in running and triathlons. After retirement in his 60's, he and his wife, Carolyn hiked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, bicycled 2,000 miles on one trip, and sailed many times offshore with family. At 66, he rafted the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon on a family trip. He is survived by his wife Carolyn Leckband, sister Joanne Nadelhoffer, brother Garwood Leckband (Jean) and children Meta Stevenson (Mark) and Susan Leckband (John), grandchildren and multiple cousins, nieces and nephews. He was an adventurous and kind man who will be greatly missed. We wish him clear skies as he flies above us.
