Norma Mae Smith-Johnson (Bodenhamer), 85, of Kansas City, MO passed away January 3, 2018. Norma was born February 20, 1932 in Kansas City, MO to Jake and Elizabeth Bodenhamer. Norma married to Russell L. Smith September 10, 1954, he passed away October 30, 1986. She was also preceded in death by her step-son Donald Johnson of Kansas City, MO and granddaughter Jessica Johnson. Norma graduated from NKC High School in 1950. Began her nursing education from 1950 – 1953. Upon graduating, she began her nursing career at Menorah Medical Center through 1955. Research Hospital April – September 1956. Dr. John Cashman 1956-1957. Research Hospital 1957–1958. NKC Hospital 1958–1967. Dr. John Williams 1967–1972. Moved to Kimberling City, worked at Skaggs Community Hospital 1972 –1977. Kimberling City Medical Group 1977–1982. Stone County Health Department 1982–1989. Norma was promoted to Administrator of the health department in 1984. Norma left the health department in 1989 to move back to KC. She began working at Clay County Public Health Center and retired in 1998 to spend more time with her children, grandchildren and travel with her husband.

The love of Norma’s life was her husband, children and grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling although her favorite was Albuquerque, NM for the annual International Balloon Fiesta. Norma was a history buff. Her personal hero was Harry Truman. She met him at Starlight Theater one night while she was volunteering with a diabetic camp at Swope Park. Then later while Mr. Truman was a patient at Menorah Medical Center, she nursed him back to health.

Norma married Carl W. Johnson November 11, 1995 of the home, who survives. She is also survived by her children Jerry Smith of Wheatland, MO, Sally Johnson (Daniel) of KC, MO, Rusty Smith of Kimberling City, MO. Step children Carlton Johnson (Patty) of Springfield, MO, Carla Leavitt of Plattsburg, MO, Chris Johnson of Los Angeles, CA, Tammy Woody of Chillicothe, MO, Trent Johnson of NKC, MO, Marissa Booth of Kansas City, MO. Grandchildren: Tara Crowder, Brittnay Frates, Mallory Woodroof, Rebecca Ranker, Sean Smith, Meagan Campbell, Bobby Johnson, Michael Johnson, Adam Johnson, David Johnson, Brian Burke, Marlin Gray, Taylor Leavitt, Austin Leavitt, Brody Howe, Ridge Howe, Hayden Clubine, Macie Booth, and Evan Castelletto; and sister Dee Manies of Overland Park.

Celebration of life service 2:00 pm Sat January 13, 2018 White Chapel Funeral Home, Gladstone, MO. Family will receive friends at 1:00 pm, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Pine Ridge Presbyterian Deacon’s Fund.
