COLUMBIA - Mrs. Norma Niggel Rooney, 94, died Sunday, January 22, 2017. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Margaret Elizabeth Modlin and Carl Joseph Niggel Sr. She lived her entire life in Columbia. She attended Shandon Grammar School and Hand Junior High School, where she was May Queen. She graduated from Ursuline Academy for girls and was awarded a scholarship to attend Ursuline Junior College for girls in Louisville, Ky. She attended the University of S. C. and studied Interior Design at Ringling Art School in Sarasota, Fla. She was associated with Dora Gray Studios as an interior designer. In addition, she attended the French Language School, Institut d’Etudes Francaises de Touraine in Tours, France.

She met and married her husband, Russell, shortly after WWII, and together they enjoyed more than sixty years of marriage. They shared a love of travel, and ventured around the world, collecting memories, adventures and treasures. Norma loved art, history, good books, good friends and good parties. Most of all, however, she loved her family. One of seven siblings, she was a protective sister, and a devoted aunt to her nieces. She shared her time, talent and treasure with her nieces, and took such joy in watching them grow up and start families of their own. She will be greatly missed.

Her last few years provided some physical challenges in living, which she met with her usual grace and determination. The family is grateful for all the nursing assistants provided to her through Solutions, and particularly grateful for her devoted companion, Edith Hammond. Edith arrived early every morning, like a ray of sunshine, to help her start each day on the right path.

Surviving are her sister, June N. Derrick of Columbia; nieces, Dr. Elizabeth Derrick Wofford (John) of Columbia, Catherine Derrick Baker (Tom) of Richmond, Va., Ellison Derrick Robinson (Clay) of Columbia, Mary Key Escue (Bill) of Columbia, Anna Rankin Moss of Columbia, Marty Rankin Bonds (Jonathon) of Westchester, Pa; two nephews, Dr. George M. Niggel of Columbia, Joseph C. Niggel (Sabrina) of Charlotte, N.C. She was predeceased by her husband, T. Russell Rooney.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 PM on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, in the Guignard Mansion. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Burial will be private. A Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Rooney will be celebrated at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 18, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choosing.
