“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course. I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” II Timothy 4:7-8 Mr. Ocie Rivers was born June 23, 1930 in Florence County. He was the youngest child of Reverend Alexander and Tressie McCall Rivers. Ocie answered God’s final call on Tuesday January 2, 2018. Ocie was educated in the public schools of Florence County. He later served in the United States Army, from which he was honorably discharged. Ocie had a passion for music. Earlier in life, he played the bass guitar, sang, toured and recorded as a member of several gospel singing groups to include, The Five Angels Gospel Singers and Sensational Five Angels. Ocie returned to his hometown of Florence, South Carolina in late 1980’s, continuing his cement trade and worked as a landscaper. He loved playing checkers and was an avid fisherman. He was known for his charismatic ways and gentle demeanor. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Alford Rivers, Charles David “CD” Rivers, Ella Mae Timmons, Mary Wilkins, and John Thomas Rivers; and a step-daughter, Danielle Matthews. Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Idella Rivers of Florence, SC; his daughter, Anita Kurgan of Washington, D.C.; his son, Victor (Takiyah) Rivers of Lithia Springs, GA; three grandchildren: William, Alexus and Chitel; one great-grandchild; two step-daughters, Audrey (Kim) Luckey and Barbara Brown; a special friend, Frances James and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
