COLUMBIA – Pearl Newton Desilet, 89, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2017, at the Pruitt Health Nursing Home, in Ridgeway, South Carolina.



Born June 9, 1928, in Socastee, South Carolina, on a tobacco farm, she was a daughter of the late Charles Gordon and Bessie Delia Turbeville Newton. She was a long-time resident of Columbia, South Carolina, and was retired from the local Winn Dixie Grocery Store, where she was very popular and loved by many. After retirement, Ms. Desilet thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and pets.



Surviving are a son, Ronald Edward Desilet, of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Karen Beth Desilet Neal and Kathryn Pearl Desilet, both of Columbia; one sister, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Newton Hopkins, of Cayce; five grandchildren, Jason, Kevin, Kimberly, Kelly and Andrew; a step granddaughter, Caroline; two great grandchildren, Kassidy and Christian and a step great grandson, Connor.



In addition to her parents, Ms. Desilet was preceded in death by a son, Phillip Andrew Desilet of Columbia; two brothers, Charles Gordon Newton and Joseph Betts Newton, Sr., both of Thomson, Georgia; four sisters, Bessie Delia Newton of Socastee, Narcille Newton Vereen Wilkie of Myrtle Beach, Janice Newton Schwartz of Manning and Marguerite Newton Macklen of Aiken; former husband, Wilfred Edward Desilet and her beloved pets, Wellie and Pixie.



Per Ms. Desilet’s wishes, there will be no service. Also per her wishes, Ms. Desilet was cremated and her remains will be put to rest in a private family gathering in Charlotte, N.C., alongside Will Desilet, her former husband, and father of her four children.



Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association or to an animal charity of the donor’s choice.
