Peggy Lou Sawyer Manly (Mrs. Isaac Vaughn Manly) died at home on Tuesday, September 26, 2017. She was born in Akron, Ohio on December 17, 1924 to Mr. and Mrs. James Vernon Sawyer. Graduating from Wellesley College in 1946, she married Isaac V. Manly in 1948 when her husband was in residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston having graduated from Harvard Medical School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He first saw the love of his life when she had the lead role in the Junior Show at Wellesley. They were married for 61 years.
Ike and Peggy Manly moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1954 where he began his private surgical practice. For years Peggy Manly was busy rearing her four children and making life-long friendships which she treasured. As a tireless volunteer, she brought her many talents and enthusiasm to her community, assuming leadership responsibilities in The Junior League of Raleigh, the Wake County Medical Society Alliance and the Art Society of the North Carolina Museum of Art.
Peggy was devoted to her family. In 1961 the family moved to a new home on the edge of town where the children thrived on the banks of a quarry lake. Summers at Atlantic Beach were a family tradition and continued as the children had families of their own. For years friends at Coral Bay East at the beach braced themselves for the onslaught of the annual 'Camp Manly'. These celebrated times forged a strong family identity and faith in God which continues to sustain each family member.
Besides her family, Peggy considered her most important work to be a teacher at the Cornerstone Bible Study at St. Michael's Episcopal Church which she started and led for twenty years. Always willing to laugh at herself, she combined her love of scholarship with a wonderful sense of humor which brought the scriptures alive for both family and friends. Her family treasures her Bible Study tapes which will undoubtedly pass to future generations.
Peggy also loved to travel with her family and was an avid bridge player.
Peggy Manly is survived by her children, Katherine Manly Bell and her husband, Jeffrey Graham Bell of Bryn Mawr, PA; James Sawyer Manly and his wife, Susan Wenger Manly of Holly Springs, NC; Elizabeth Manly Jernigan and her husband, Leonard T. Jernigan of Raleigh, NC; and Margaret Manly Graddy of Versailles, KY. Her grandchildren are Whitney Bell Corbett, Jeffrey Sawyer Bell, and James Graham Bell; Shawn Christopher McNickle and Matthew Eric McNickle; Elizabeth Manly Harrison and Hayes Jernigan Finley; and Isaac Manly Graddy and his brother, William Lee Graddy III. Her great grandchildren are Austin Graham Corbett , Connor Keegan Corbett and Adeleine Margo Bell; Bella Sue McNickle and Katherine Alexandra McNickle; Webster Glenn Harrison II and Leonard Manly Harrison; and Isaac Richard Graddy, Eli Joseph Graddy, and David Joshua Graddy.
