Phillip Powell Sr. was born to the late James and Myrtle Powell, September 7, 1946 in Churchland, Virginia. He died on September 30, 2017 with his wife Gracie by his side. After graduating from Crestwood High School, Phil attended Norfolk State University and studied Physics. He received Master’s degrees from Central Michigan University and St. Leo University.



From 1966 - 1977, Phillip faithfully served his country, serving two tours in Vietnam. He then served in the United States Army Reserve from 1977 – 2006. Phillip retired after 26 years with the National Transportation Safety Board where he served as the Atlanta - Southeast Regional Director.



He was a member of the Fort McPherson Protestant Chapel and Faith Independent Baptist Church. He enjoyed church activities, Bible studies, photography, genealogy and supporting youth activities. But first and foremost, Phillip loved his family.



He was preceded in death by siblings, Charlotte Mills and Bobby Elliott. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Gracie Powell; sons, Phillip (Cyndi) Powell, Jr. and Paul (Sharron) Powell all of Hampton, Georgia; grandchildren, Charles, Tristan and Phillip James Powell; siblings, James Powell of Maryland, Lewis (Anna) Powell of California, Reuben (Alethia) Powell of Maryland, Caleb (Clarecine) Powell, Sr. of Florida, Naomi (Vaurice) Chambers of Virginia, Rebecca Powell of Virginia and Thomasine (John) Kelley of Maryland. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
