Ralph E. Hartnagel, Jr. of Elkhart passed away Thursday, April 26, 2012 at his home. He was born January 8, 1936 in St. Louis, Mo. to Ralph & Mildred (Flori) Hartnagel and married Shirley (Hartmann) Hartnagel on May 31, 1958. He is survived by his wife Shirley Hartnagel of Elkhart, Son, Ralph III (Chris) Hartnagel , Brett (Heather), Justin, Michael; Son, Gary (Connie) Hartnagel, Maggie, Augie, Francie; Son, Jeff (Kristen) Hartnagel , Ryan, Steven; Daughter, Karen (Dan) Oakley, Katherine, Caroline, Ben; Daughter, Christine (Jeff) Wysong, Nick, Drew, Allie. He is also survived by two brothers Jack and Noel Hartnagel and one sister Joyce (John) Krebs, all of St Louis, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Mildred Hartnagel and his brother, Jamie. Ralph graduated from Coyle High School, Kirkwood, MO and Southeast MO State in Cape Girardeau, MO. His 1955 football team was inducted into SEMO State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003. Ralph was employed from 1966/1995 at Miles/Bayer and was director of Toxicology. His colleagues in the toxicology department were very important to him. He was a member of The Society of Toxicology. In 1995 he was recognized for 10 years of outstanding service and expertise, as chairman of the DEET Toxicology subcommittee. Ralph loved the outdoors and sports. He participated in ice hockey at the Ice Box into his 70's and volunteered at NIBCO Ice Rink in Elkhart. He climbed Longs Peak at age 68, treasured family vacations, coached youth sports, and loved watching his grandchildren participate in athletics. Visitation will be Sunday April 29, 2012 from 4 to 7 pm at Hartzler Gutermuth Inman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Monday April 30th at Saint Vincent DePaul Catholic Church at 10 am with Father Glen Kohrman officiating services. Burial will take place following the services at Saint Vincent's Cemetery. Memorials can be given to American Cancer Society Research, Hospice and Palliative Care of Elkhart, and Catholic Charities. Hartzler Gutermuth Inman Funeral Home is in charge of all funeral arrangements.
