Raymond Moscowitz, 78, a long-time Indiana journalist, died June 8 in Bloomington.
Moscowitz, a member of the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame (inducted in 2002), spent 29 years with Nixon Newspapers, Inc., the last ten as editorial director overseeing the company's 12 newspapers. He was managing editor of the Frankfort Times, editor of the Wabash Plain Dealer, editor of the Michigan City News-Dispatch, publisher of the Wabash Plain Dealer, and publisher of the Peru Tribune.
In 1998, the Hoosier State Press Association created The Ray Moscowitz Award, which recognizes newspaper excellence "beyond the call of duty." The first Ray Moscowitz Award was given at the association's 1998 Newsroom Seminar to seven newspapers for a series of stories that exposed how public officials routinely violate Indiana's Open Records Law.
He was named Print Journalist of the Year 2001 by Western Kentucky University at Bowling Green, KY, in October 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara, Bloomington; son and daughter-in-law, David and Leigh, and grandchildren Amelia and Elijah, Columbia, SC; sisters Barbara Benon, Santa Barbara, CA, and Sharon Hasson, Encino, CA; a sister-in-law, Gerry Moscowitz, Encino, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Cecelia (Sherman) Moscowitz, and a brother, Robert.
A memorial service will be held in Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 E. Third St., Bloomington, IN 47401 at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2016.
