Richard "Dick" Charles, 89, of Oxford, passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon, March 2, 2017, in the New York State Veterans' Home where he had been a resident since October 2014.
Born in Norwich on September 26, 1927, Dick was the son of Harry and Florence Brooker Charles. While growing up in Norwich, he attended the Norwich City schools and later served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, with active service from 1944 until 1946.
On March 5, 1955 he married Eleanor Jane "Ellie" Leach where they lived in Norwich until moving to Oxford with their family in 1971. Dick was a member of the Norwich Fire Department, Alert Hose No. 1, and also the Oxford American Legion, Fort Hill Post #376. Dick retired from The Raymond Corporation in 1988 after many years of service.
Dick is predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Eleanor Jane Leach Charles on December 1, 2010; their adopted son, Andrew LaVerne Charles on August 24, 2014; his brothers, John, Donald, James, Frederick and Robert Charles, and his sisters, Dorothy Winner and Beatrice Lawrence. He is survived by his children: Ronald R. Charles and Desseray Wallace, of Norwich, Brenda Sue and James Bordeau, of Unadilla. Also surviving are Dick's grandchildren: Adam James and Samantha Sue Bordeau, Richard and Lacey Hathaway and Brienne Charles.
Memorial services for Dick will be held on Tuesday, March 7, at 6:00 p.m. from the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad St. Norwich, with Rev. Jeremy Stopford, pastor of the Earlville Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4-6 p.m.
