Richard "Rick" Vavra 74, of Chenango Bridge, passed away peacefully with his daughter by his side at Susquehanna Nursing Home on May 20, 2017 after a brief illness. He is predeceased by his parents Francis and Emily Vavra; and his brother Thomas Vavra. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Bridget; daughter Faith; grandson Nickolas Bergman; as well as many other loving family members. He was a 1960 graduate of Chenango Valley High School where he played baseball and ran track. He served in the New York State National Guard for six years. Rick was an avid golfer, bowler, college sports watcher, bocce ball player and his family loved it when he made chili and Manhattan clam chowder. He worked for the NYS Department of Transportation in Binghamton for 37 years and retired in 1999. During his retirement years, he enjoyed several winters in Florida, traveling where his daughter moved and watching his grandson's sporting events but he especially enjoyed the out of town golf trips, golf leagues and weekly golf outings with his friends that were like family, because when Rick called you a friend you were his friend for life. Rick was a loving husband, father and grandfather; a loyal friend to all who knew him and his mechevious smile will be dearly missed. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1031 Chenango Street, Binghamton, NY from 11 am to12pm. A Funeral mass will follow at 12 pm. Rick loved animals, so, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Rick's name to the Broome County Dog Shelter, 110 Cutler Pond Road, Binghamton, NY 13905.
