Richard Lempka of Mesa, AZ, passed away on November 16, 2016. He was born January 7, 1922 in Tecumseh, Nebraska, the son of Stanley and Mary(Biskup) Lempka. After graduating High School he joined the Army Air Corp. His basic training was in Wichita Falls, TX and after basic he was stationed at the Army Airbase in Dodge City, KS as a flight engineer. The Airbase was a training base for the Royal Air Force and Free French pilots in basic flight training, the base becoming a specialized B-26 Marauder training facility. In addition it was also a training base for Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASPs).
After the war he went to work at Skaggs Ford Motor Company as a mechanic, he married Mary Elenor Trenkamp of Spearville, KS on June 18, 1946 and later went to work for the U.S. Post Office in Dodge City as a Letter Carrier and retired from the Postal Service in 1982.He had a desire to travel and wanted to experience warmer climates which included Texas and Arizona. After traveling to Texas a few times he thought he would try Mesa, Arizona. In Mesa, many of the retirement communities sponsor square dances. It was at one of these dance events he met Virginia Durham, fell in love, and they were married March 18, 1989. They lived and danced together for 23 years. Richard and Virginia enjoyed spending their summers at their mountain cabin, traveling and their grandchildren. Richard was an accomplished stained glass artist, gardener and certified automotive, aircraft airframe and power plant mechanic. Survivors include: his daughter, Debra (Dennis) Layman of Napoleon, OH, son, Gary (Nancy) Lempka, Dodge City, KS, daughter, Connie Durham Mesa, AZ, son John (Nellie) Durham, Mesa, AZ, and several grandchildren, great grand-children, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia Durham Lempka, ex-wife Mary Lempka, his parents Stanley and Mary Lempka, his brother, Leroy Lempka and his sister, Alvena Lempka.
