APPELT, Richard Walter, born June 15, 1943 to Walter and Waneta Appelt, Rich was the second of three children. He was an enthusiastic cheerleader to all, especially his sisters and family. He was a Chicago Public High School teacher for 30 plus years, and a true intellectual. He loved history, music, art, gardening, hand-made and antique goods, cartography, politics, travel, family and friends, and most of all Sharon, his wife of 35 years. She was his match intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally. She was his blessing. After retiring from the Chicago Public Schools they moved to Dayton, Ohio to be closer to Sharon's family, where they lived for the next 18 years. Always generous of heart, he helped others whenever he could. He volunteered at every church he was a member of, especially the First Baptist Church in Dayton where he served on the Board of Trustees for 10 years, and worked to partner with community groups of that city. He included mentoring as part of his work with students. He stayed in touch with his life-long friend John Sweeney, and kept the men of the family connected as brothers to one another. He is preceded in death by his first wife Sue and his son Ryan. Rich is survived by his wife Sharon, his sisters Marcella and Mary, his many nephews, nieces, cousins, and Sharon's family, all of whom he loved dearly.
