Robert Dale Harris, 89, of One Park Place, Owensboro, Kentucky died Monday, March 30, 2015, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born March 9, 1926 in Warrick County, Indiana to the late Clive and Blanche Harris. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD with the Class of 1950 and was commissioned as an officer. After four more years of service he came to Owensboro where he worked for a time as Manufacturing Engineer in the General Electric Tube Plant. Following that he worked at Southern Indiana Gas & Electric Company where he became Superintendent of the F.B. Culley Generating Station near Newburgh, IN. In 1963, he returned to Owensboro to hire the crew and start up the Elmer Smith Generating Station for O.M.U., where he retired as Director of Production in 1989, after 26 years of service. He was a life member of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association, a charter member and past president of the Evansville Chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a former member of the Owensboro Lions Club where he served as Chairman of its Charity Horse Show and Treasurer of the Bench Fund, a member and past chairman of the Owensboro Council for Retarded Citizens and a member of the Kentucky Beef Cattlemen's Association. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Phyllis Adams Harris on December 31, 2005; a son, Mark Richard Harris on January 6, 2005; and a brother, Indiana State Senator Richard "Dick" Harris. Survivors include his son, Dale Harris (Rhonda) of Owensboro; his daughter, Ann Harris Lovett of Myrtle Beach, SC; three grandchildren, Laura Brianne Mann (Craig) of Bowling Green, Brian Allen Harris (Jessica) of Owensboro and Brooke Renee Harris of Louisville; and three great grandchildren, Carter and Landon Harris and Lily Mann. Services are 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2015, at the Chapel of James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory in Owensboro. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Wednesday and after 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
