Robert Dale Olson, 92, passed away on Monday, July 3, 2017 at Redwood Terrace Health Center, in Escondido, CA.



Robert was born June 3, 1925 in Dunbar, Iowa, the son of Clifford and Myrtle (Bryngelson) Olson. He graduated from Dunbar High School in 1942.



After High School, Robert attended Marshalltown Junior College, then Iowa State and Duke University (1944) in preparation to serve as a pilot with the Navy Reserve. He received a commission as ensign in 1946. He was part of a goodwill world tour aboard the aircraft carrier USS Rendova in 1948. He flew the TBF Avenger and made the 13,000th landing of this plane on the USS Tarawa.



Robert married Anne Elizabeth Thornton December 28, 1948 in San Diego, California. They had six children: Robert, William, Georgianne, James, Clifford, and Richard.



After leavig the Navy Reserves in 1949, Robert completed a degree in business administration at San Diego State College (1952). He then worked 36 years as a trust officer with Bank of America and Wells Fargo and retired in 1989.



Robert is survived by his wife of 68 years, Anne Elizabeth Thornton, six children: Robert Botne, William (Kathryn) Olson, Georgianne Sevilla, James (Jolene) Olson, Clifford (Roxanne) Olson, Richard (Lisa) Olson; 15 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Carroll Olson and sister Doris Heng.



A memorial service will be held at 2 pm Thursday, July 6th, 2017 at Redwood Terrace Health Center, Dittus Hall. Robert will be laid to rest at El Camino Memorial Park (Vista of Liberty).
