Robin Hinkley, 77, departed this earthly life peacefully on November 29, 2017 at home in his cottage at the Woodland Terrace senior community in Cary, NC, with this wife, Gloria Hinkley, at his bedside. Physicians in the UNC healthcare system, including REX hospital, were unable to heal the progress of his heart disease.
Robin was born in Gardiner, Maine. He met Gloria, the love of his life while in high school. They married shortly after his high school graduation while Robin was in the US Navy's boot camp. Robin's Navy career was primarily at sea on board destroyers, which he called "a tin can Navy". After leaving the Navy, Robin was employed by IBM. His long career with IBM took him and Gloria to New Hampshire, New York and ultimately to Raleigh, NC where he retired from IBM.
In retirement, Robin was active in Post 67 of the American Legion where he served as Post historian and produced and edited Post 67's "Howler", a monthly newsletter which garnered several awards. In 2014 he and Gloria moved their residence to a cottage in Woodland Terrace senior community in Cary, NC where he was popular with residents as a connoisseur of light houses and raconteur of stories from his Maine upbringing. His humor was highly regarded by residents and he and his wife were popular dinner companions.
In addition to his wife, Robin is survived by a daughter Christine and her husband Edwin and 2 grandchildren Shayne and Jenniah all of Burlington, VT.
Arrangements are under the care of Brown-Wynne Funeral Home 200 SE Maynard Rd. Cary, NC 27511.
