Roy Holly Dearstyne, 93, of Raleigh, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at his residence at Springmoor Retirement Community. Roy was born in Raleigh on August 16, 1923. He enjoyed growing up in Raleigh. He was in the last graduating class of Hugh Morison High School. After high school, he joined the Air Force. He was stationed in England with the 8th Air Force group. Roy was a navigator and flew seventeen bomber missions over Germany in WWII. He saw extreme combat and was highly decorated. Roy left the Airforce in 1945; he came home to Raleigh and entered State College majoring in mechanical engineering and graduated in 1948. He helped form, and captained, the first State College Golf team where he competed successfully for several years.

On June 7, 1947, he married the love of his life, Catherine (Katie) Austell. The couple moved to Levittown, New York on Long Island, where Roy took a job at Electric Bond and Shave Company. He and Katie moved back to Raleigh in 1950, and Roy went to work for The Division of Purchasing and Contracts for the state of NC. During this time, Roy and Katie had 2 children, Mike and Holly; thus began a long, loving and wonderful family experience. In 1961, Roy went to work with Southern Desk Company selling institutional furniture all over the state. He later opened his own furniture sales company, Interplan, with a friend, Herbert Boyd, and was very successful until his retirement in 1972.

Roy was an incredible man in so many ways. He was brilliant, well read, a wonderful conversationalist and an excellent golfer. He and Katie were blessed with dear friends and a wonderful social life. Roy was a member of the Jaycees, the Stag Club, Carolina Country Club, Wolfpack Club, Raleigh Golf Association and several other organizations. They were also fortunate enough to have traveled the World; this was a passion for both. Katie and Roy were married for almost 70 years until her passing this past December.

Roy is survived by his son, Dr. Mike Dearstyne and wife, Pam; daughter, Holly Norwood and her husband, Dr. Tom Norwood; grandchildren, Anna Feezor and husband, Dave, Marcus, Cameron , Sarah and Cate Dearstyne; step-grandchildren, Kelsey and Lexi Gage; and 5 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 2pm Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Springmoor Retirement Community in the auditorium. Private inurnment will be at St. Michael's Episcopal Church.
