COLUMBIA - Roy R. Sutherland, Jr., 90, died June 21, 2017, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital. Roy was born March 8, 1927, in Calhoun Falls, S.C., son of the late Roy R. Sutherland, Sr. and Nora S. Sutherland. After graduating from Calhoun Falls High School, Class of 1944, he served in World War II with the Eighth Air Force and First Air Division on Okinawa. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in Retailing and Education.



Roy was employed in sales with Ely and Walker, St. Louis, covering the South Georgia and North Florida territories and worked for a short time in the Dallas sales office. He returned to Columbia after marrying his wife of almost 54 years, Mary Alice Summerlin Sutherland. He worked with Sears Roebuck & Co. and retired from Haverty’s Furniture Company in 1994, where he worked part-time until he was eighty.



He was a Life Member of the Ancient Free Masons, Calhoun Falls Lodge #283, and until recent declining health an active member of Washington Street UMC and the John Harper Sunday school class. He was devoted to helping family and friends and known for his care and concern for others.



Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Summerlin Sutherland; daughter and son-in-law, Susan S. and J. Timothy Hance; son, R. Robert Sutherland III; granddaughter, Sarah E. Hance; and grandson, James T. Hance, Jr. all of Columbia; and nephew, Stanley H. Powell of Calhoun Falls. He was pre-deceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Edna S. and J. Herman Powell.



A memorial service will be held at 11 o’clock Friday, June 23, 2017 at Washington Street UMC’s Sanctuary, 1401 Washington Street with The Reverend Patricia Parrish officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel is assisting the family.
