Ruby Maud Segre nee Griffiths
Resident of 306 Nandina Lane in McDonough, GA, 30253, died on Thursday 23rd March 2017 at the Peidmont Hospital, Georgia.
Born on Thursday, 27th February 1947 in the rural farming community of Strath-Down, Treadways, St. Catherine, Jamaica to mother Marian Minzie-Francis and father Clarence Griffiths. She received elementary education at the Bermaddy Primary School.
At an early age, she joined her uncle Altimond Griffiths and his family at Mark Tree, Treadways where she learnt to be an entrepreneur; operating a grocery shop, selling at the market and doing dress making. She later went to live in St Ann where she married her first husband Mr Winston Johnson. That marriage did not last long and so she moved to Kingston to live with her cousin Naiomi Harris. While in Kingston she met Mr Winston Palmer and the relationship produced two (2) children, Dwight and Donnette, who predeceased her.
Her desire for advancement led her to gain employment at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel; a job which she kept for close to 20 years. During her tenure at the Pegasus, and while working as a waitress she met a chef, Mr Uriel Segre, and on 26th April 1986 they were married. The family eventually migrated to the USA in 1993 and lived in several places to in Charleston; New York; New Jersey and finally settled in McDonough, Atlanta.
Mrs Ruby was a caring person who was easily endeared to all. She loved her two (2) sisters and one (1) brother from her father and seven (7) sisters (one predeceased her) and one (1) brother from her mother. Her many nieces and nephews also felt her constant love and care.
Ms Ruby demonstrated strength of character as she stood as a trouper, enduring the loss of her entire immediate family and a sister within 12 years: mother in 2003, sister in 2005, father in 2010, daughter in 2011 and her son in 2015.
Faced with many personal and medical battles, Mrs Ruby Segre fought like a warrior the many bouts of sicknesses, primary of which was sickle cell. She finally laid her armour down and slept on 23rd March 2017 at 11:54pm.
She is survived by 8 Sisters, 2 Brothers, 7 Nieces, 13 Nephews; 1 Aunt, other relatives and friends.
Thanksgiving service for her life will be held on the Sunday 23rd April, 2017 at the South Atlanta Seven Day Baptist Church, 60 Dailey Mill Road, McDonough, Georgia at 12 noon. Interment will be at the East Lawn Memorial Park, 640 McGarity Road, McDonough, GA 30253.
A special viewing of the body will be held on Saturday 22nd April 2017 at 4pm.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Donnie’s Scholarship Foundation, 306 Nandina Lane, McDonough, GA 30253.
