Ruth Maxine Shamblin (Larabee), 87, of Nitro, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the Hubbard Hospice House West in South Charleston.

Born April 2, 1930 in Dunbar, Ruth was a longtime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a vibrant presence, known for her love of clogging and extravagant fashion. Ruth’s brothers learned to play musical instruments but taught her to fight instead. She was a unique force. However, her strength was tempered by kindness. For years she dressed as Santa Clause and visited families in need, distributing joy along with gifts. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and a wonderful human being. Her generosity and kindness well be greatly missed.

Preceded in death by parents, Sherman and Stella Larabee (King); brothers, Earl, Clifford, William, Harold “Bus”, Dempsey and Grover; sister, Josephine Wright (Larabee); sons, Jack Allison and Neil Shamblin Sr.; and a grandson, Neil Shamblin Jr.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Maxey E. Shamblin; brother, Holly Larabee (Violet); sons, Jerry Larabee and Mansford Shamblin (Kara); daughters, Marjorie Allison, Barbara Mace, Linda Godwin, Kemma Taylor (Sheldon), and Delores Shamblin; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Service will be 2pm Sunday, January 7, 2018 at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, 5233 Rocky Fork Road, Cross Lanes, WV 25313. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.

Visitation will begin at noon on Sunday at the funeral home.
