Ruth Marie (Nicholas) Capelle was born on a farm near Ree Heights, SD on May 22, 1923. She was one of ten children born to Dollie (Walton) and Raleigh Nicholas. Ruth was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was married to the same man for more than 60 years. She passed away peacefully at home on April 6, 2017 at the age of 93.
Ruth was a longtime resident of Mobridge, SD. She and her husband Elwood made their home there for close to 40 years. There they raised four children, two boys and two girls. Ruth and Elwood retired to Phoenix, AZ in 1992 where three of their four children lived.
Ruth knew how to make a house a home and she was always ready for company. She had a gift for hospitality and was always ready to lay out a feast for family on short notice. She was well-known for her Special K bars topped with chocolate. A pan would never last more than a day in her house. Although she had only completed school thru the 8th grade, Ruth believed in education and loved to help her grandchildren with their homework. She was an excellent speller and excelled at her favorite game Scrabble. When I say excelled, I mean she played it like it was football game and this was the Super bowl. She had a special Scrabble dictionary and was quick to challenge you on a word if she didn't recognize it. Family would often end up spending the night after a late night of Scrabble because Grandma had to play "just one more game". Despite limited room, she could always accommodate however many decided to stay over.
She would often tell of her first time cutting someone's hair. She was responsible for fixing her younger sister's hair and got tired of taking care of her long tresses. So she snuck her sister out to the barn and cut her hair short. Ruth was sure her mother was going be angry with her, but her mother's only response was "That looks alright". That began a lifetime of taking care of her and her family's hair.
She had a talent for entertaining children and could make anything seem like a game. In the springtime, she would buy toy rakes and show her grandchildren how much fun it was to rake under the endless row of hedges that surrounded her yard. They didn't fall for it. well not for long anyway. She raised four children - but her house was the second home for many more than that.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elwood, her son Ron, brothers Roy, Lloyd, Clarence, Glen and Roger, sisters Vera WIlliams, Donna Spiry, and Mavis Couture.
Ruth will be missed by her two daughters, Carol and son in law Winston Chamberlin, Sharon Lynch, and son Robert and daughter in law Lori Capelle all of Phoenix, AZ. Her daughter-in-law Arlene Capelle of Mandan, ND, nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren and her sister Marjorie Ballet of Rapid City, SD. And all her extended family members and her many friends.
