Ruth Travers Bennett, 83, of Salisbury passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Monday, August 22, 2016. Ruth was a retired school teacher. Her career began at the Salisbury State Teachers College Campus School until its closure, when she then taught at Pemberton Elementary and Pinehurst Elementary Schools in Wicomico County. Ruth loved her students and 30 years of teaching as a Kindergarten and 2nd grade teacher. She grew up in an education household as the daughter of Margaret Travers Bennett and James M. Bennett, the former Superintendent of Wicomico County Schools from 1917-1957. Her parents preceded her in death. A lifelong member of St. Peters Episcopal Church, the Wicomico County Retired Teachers Association and Westside Historical Society, she spent her adult life in Wicomico County. Ruth graduated from the University of Maryland in College Park where she received her Bachelor and Master degrees in Education. In her undergraduate years at UMCP, she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. She resided at Oak Hill Townhouses for over 30 years where she loved her summers at the pool with her pool buddies. She watched earnestly every boat built at Chesapeake Shipbuilding and is one of the lucky ones to have witnessed most of the new ship launchings. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Judge William Travers, uncle, wife Dorothy and daughter Ann, Ruth Bennett Stephens, aunt and husband I.W. Stephens, Sara Ann Stanton Peregoy, cousin and husband R. Norman Peregoy. She is survived by her 2nd cousins, Heidi Peregoy Thompson, Perry Peregoy, Priscilla Peregoy Timken, Bob Peregoy his wife Barb; and their families. She was lovingly known to her family as Little Ruth. Friends, like family, were everything to Ruth and she leaves behind a dear and close group of friends. A visitation will be held Saturday from 10am-11am at Bounds Funeral Home on East Main Street in Salisbury with a funeral service to follow at 11am. Rev. David Michaud will officiate. Interment will follow in Parsons Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Coastal Hospice, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802.
