Reverend Samuel Benton "Ben" Jernigan, Jr., age 81 years, of Hampstead passed peaceably from this earth to his heavenly home on February 28, 2017. He was born in Spartanburg, SC to the late S. Ben Jernigan and Naomi Grace Raney Jernigan. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Brush Jernigan, and his sister Ruth Marie Jernigan Brush. He is survived by his daughter Rene' Jernigan Clelland and husband Terry of Hampstead, NC; son Samm Jernigan and wife Teresa of Wilmington, NC; daughter Karla Jernigan Bennett and husband Rosh of Wilmington, NC; sister Sharon Jernigan Davis and husband Tommy of Wilmington, NC; 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many friends and loved ones.

On August 8, 1949 he became a member of Christ's Sanctified Holy Church, when as a lad of 14 years old he was sanctified by the Holy Ghost when he dedicated his life to the teachings and gospel of Jesus Christ. He spent his childhood in Norfolk, VA where he graduated as valedictorian from Norview High School in 1953. After he married in 1955, he became an employee of the late William Collins from whom he learned the trade of home building. In 1963, he moved to establish a sister church in Augusta, GA. It was there that he founded Benton Construction Company, Inc. in 1971. In 1986 he again relocated with his church to Wilmington, NC where he reestablished his business and built fine homes.

He served Christ's Sanctified Holy Church in many ways; as a Senior Deacon, an Ordained Minister, and a member of the church governing Board. He served the church congregations in Augusta, GA (1963 to 1986) and in Wilmington, NC (1986 to 2011). He was steadfast, unmovable, and always abounding in the work of the Lord.

He is affectionately known as "Granddad" to his 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Terry Lee Clelland, Jr. and wife DeanNa, great-grandchildren Kathryn and Joseph of Youngsville, NC; Amy Jernigan Copeland and husband David, great-grandchildren Claire, Samuel, and Lydia of Wilmington, NC; Heather Clelland of Durham, NC; Benton Jernigan of Wilmington, NC; Nora Clelland of Raleigh, NC; Joshua Jernigan and wife Meredith, great-granddaughter Caroline Ruth of Columbia, SC; Parker Clelland of Raleigh, NC; Paul Clelland of Greenville, NC.; Kyle, Ally, and Nick Bennett of Wilmington, NC.

A visitation will be held Thursday, March 2nd from 6pm to 8 pm at Christ's Sanctified Holy Church located at 7517 Market Street, Wilmington, NC. Services to celebrate the life of Rev. Ben Jernigan will be held Sunday, March 5th from 7pm to 9pm and the funeral will be Monday, March 6th at 2pm with graveside service to follow at Christ's Sanctified Holy Church, 2500 N Hwy 41 Fort Valley, GA.
