LTC Scott Steven Naelitz, Sr., age 55, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2017,at his home, shrouded in love and light after a fierce battle with cancer.
Scott was born on January 30, 1962 in Lorain, OH, son of the late Jim Naelitz and his mother Jeannie Ceja. He was stationed in Texas, Virginia, Hawaii, Washington, Georgia, South Carolina,Cuba, and many countries in the Middle East.
Scott was a highly decorated retired Lieutenant Colonel who proudly served his country for twenty eight years in the United States Army and two years in the United States Air Force. He earned multiple medals and awards, including three bronze service stars during his tours in Southwest Asia, Qatar and Kuwait. Scott lived for his soldiers. He fought for them and mentored them. He ran them hard and then laughed harder with them. He loved and dedicated his life to his country.
Scott earned his Master’s Degree in Emergency Management from Touro University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He also worked for the Clorox Company, Empire Distributors, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, and Chattahoochee Technical College. His last employment was with The Center for Disease Control in the Emergency Management Operations division, where he was looking forward to a year’s assignment in Liberia before he became sick.
Scott was a loving husband and father who cherished his family. He was an avid Woodland High School supporter and loved watching his children’s activities. His hobbies included kayaking with his wife, Terri and their beloved dogs, Kona and Alvin. He shared a love of metal music with his children and attended concerts with his daughter.
He is survived by his mother, Jeannette (Victor) Ceja of Lorain, OH; loving wife of thirty-one years, Terri Naelitz; sons, Scott Steven Naelitz, Jr. of Ashville, NC, Zachary Naelitz of Baltimore, MD and Damien Naelitz of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Aleena Naelitz of Atlanta, GA; brother, Mark Naelitz of Lorain, OH; sister, Jill Wickline of Lorain, OH; several cherished nephews and one niece.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Friday, the 24th of March, 2017 at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Marietta, GA with Monsignor John Walsh, Monsignor Dan Stack and Father Juan Anzora officiating.
Friends are cordially invited to a gathering with the family from four o’clock in the afternoon until eight, on Thursday, the 23rd of March, 2017 in the chapel of Owen Funeral Home. Rosary will be led at 6:30pm by Rev. Mr. Miguel Echevarria.
Graveside services will be held at ten o’clock in the morning on Monday, the 27th of March, 2017 in the Georgia National Cemetery with full military honors presented.
The family would like to send a special thanks to the Doctors and Nurses of Emory Hospital, especially his pulmonology team of Dr. Keriann Van Nostrand and Deborah Caughman. And also Heartland Hospice for the tender and loving care shown to Scott.
