COLUMBIA - A memorial service will be held for Seth Alexander Thomas, 24, at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 5637 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. There will be a light reception following the service. Visitation will be at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel on Friday, June 30, 2017 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Seth Thomas went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, June 23, 2017. He was hiking in the Andes Mountains near Cuzco in Peru and fell in a ravine. Seth was hiking to see a cross on top of the mountain when the accident occurred. He was in Peru working at a women’s clinic to improve the lives of the Peruvian people. Seth went on a medical mission’s trip in Nicaragua and Costa Rica in 2014 where he validated his desire to work in the mission’s field after reaching his goal of becoming a doctor. The opportunity in Peru was a continuation of this desire to serve.

Seth was born on January 16, 1993 in Columbia, SC. He is survived by his parents, Heyward and Janet Thomas; his intended fiancé, Ekaterina Muravevskaia; his sister, Brandie Goulette (Brian); his brother, Caleb Thomas; grandfather, Charles Funderburke; grandmother, Georgia Petrides; and nephews, Arthur and Isaac Goulette. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Dr. Richard and Patsy Thomas. Seth was and will forever be cherished by his family.

Seth was a brilliant person whose heart vastly surpassed his intelligence. Seth was a true renaissance man, an amazing musician, a poet, he loved to read, enjoyed running, greatly relished travel, was extremely fluent in Spanish, and loved the Hispanic cultures. Seth’s primary goal in life was to help and improve the lives of others. Seth loved to learn and never wasted any moment of his life. Seth worked tirelessly to care for and truly get to know everyone that he met. Seth especially had concern for those of less fortunate circumstances and those who struggled with the difficulties of life.

Seth was a student at the USC Medical School and was the Secretary / Treasurer of his class of 2020. Prior to attending medical school, he spent a year in the Galicia area of Spain teaching English and Science to primary school age children. He exposed the Spanish children of the school to Christianity through English Christmas carols orchestrated on his violin. This role allowed him to travel to many countries in Europe where he gained an understanding of the people and cultures where he visited. After the end of his work in Spain, he hiked the Camino del Norte in 30 days which encompassed over 500 miles.

Seth was a graduate of Calhoun Honors College at Clemson University, where he received both general and departmental honors. He majored in Bio-Engineering and minored in Spanish. Seth was a member of the Clemson Orchestra, the Clemson Contra band, and served as vice president of the Clemson Orchestra for 3 years. During his time at Clemson, he worked as a RA, was involved in Clemson Project Remedy, and Relay for life.

Seth was a graduate of Dutch Fork High School and was in the top ten of his class. He was a STEM’s honors student, honors graduate, Master Class Orchestra member, Cross Country Team member, and played in the SC Youth Philharmonic as well as other teams and club activities.

Seth would want to be remembered for his love of God and his desire to always show compassion and concern for everyone he encountered. He would want everyone who has been touched by his life in any way to incorporate these same qualities in their lives. He would want you to think of others more than yourself as he did and to let your actions display these qualities.

Memorials can be sent to Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 5637 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212; or City Lights Church, PO Box 27307, Greenville, SC 29616.
