A joint celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 8th, for longtime residents of Carmel, Seth Joseph Potter (July 1922 - February 15th 2017), and his bride of 69 years and love of his life Ellen Louise Potter , known to all as "Jimmie" (November 1924 - December 2015). To their friends and family, they were always known as "Seth and Jimmie". Their memorial service will begin on April 8th at 1 pm at the Carmel Presbyterian Church located at Junipero St. and Ocean Avenue, Carmel-By-The Sea, Ca, with a reception to follow.
Jimmie was born on her family's ranch in Belota, Ca., to Maurice and Minnie Margaret (Kiler)Yocum. She was a farm girl who loved her horses, sheep, cows, chickens, dogs and cats and could always be seen with her fishing pole catching bass and perch in the Calaveras river and frogs from the family pond. She graduated from the College of the Pacific in Stockton, Ca, where she was the President of her sorority, homecoming queen and where she "caught" Seth.
Seth was born in Ripon, Ca, to Fredrick Kiel and Ethel Potter. He followed in the family tradition of working in the family vineyards and playing baseball as an accomplished catcher. Not long after Pearl Harbon, Seth joined the navy and flew as a Naval aviator. After the war, he returned to Stockton, Ca., where he attended the College of the Pacific, played baseball as their varsity catcher, lived the life of a fraternity brother, and was lucky enough to meet Jimmie, his lifelong friend, soul mate and bride of 69 years. Seth had a 39 year career in the lumber business that included Stockton Box, American Forest Products and Dant and Russell where he retired as their CEO.
Seth considered playing professional baseball for the Chicago White Socks as well as continuing his naval career. Jimmie made it clear that she wanted a family and that if he wanted her as a partner in life and marriage he was going to have to settle down and establish deep roots. Seth and Jimmie married in November of 1946 and had their first son, Greg, in 1948 with Jeff following in 1949 and Scott in 1955. They were amazing parents who created a home of love and energy. The Potter family was very close and spent their time at the family ranch east of Stockton, at the family home in Carmel which dated back to 1922 loving the Carmel beach and hundreds of rounds of golf, and at the beaches of Southern California where the family was raised. As you can see, the Potter family was active and loved the outdoors. Seth and Jimmie leave a legacy of 3 sons and 4 grand children, Colleen, Courtney, Thomas and Hana.
On the 8th of April, friends and family are going to gather to celebrate two amazing people who left their mark on everyone they met. As dedicated Christians, the door of their home and their arms were always open to all comers. The doors of the Carmel Presbyterian church will be open to you to celebrate Seth and Jimmie's lives. Challenge yourself to be ready to share how Seth and Jimmie impacted your life and feel free to share your stories at the reception following the memorial service.
