Shirlene Hardin Duncan, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her children, on October 7, 2017, due to complications from cancer. Shirlene was born in Los Angeles, CA on October 12, 1936, to Arvilla and Raymond Hardin. She grew up in Salt Lake City, and attended Webster Elementary School, Bryan Middle School, and East High School. She was the first member of her family to attend college and studied at the University of Utah where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi. She was married for forty years to Adam "Mickey" Duncan until he passed away in 2000 in Coronado, California. She was a light in the life of all who knew her. Shirlene lived full and rich life in a world filled with love and laughter, of sunsets and beauty. In the course of eighty years, she traveled to every continent, read voraciously, and cultivated friendships that lasted a lifetime. She also demonstrated an amazing capacity for empathy and generosity, and felt deep concern for the suffering and hardships of others. Her infectious smile and always-present laughter will be greatly missed. Shirlene is survived by her four children: Heather (husband Lee, San Diego), Holly (wife Sue, Portland), Adam (Los Angeles), and Jonathan (SLC); seven grandchildren whom she adored: Braden, Laura, Kara, Alex, Patrick, Zoe and Sam; and two sisters Darlene and Marilyn. A graveside service was held on Tuesday October 10, 2017; and there will be a Celebration of Her Life on Saturday October 21, 2017. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Utah ACLU in honor of the Annual Mickey Duncan Award for excellence in legal advocacy of civil liberties.
