Shirley Corning Haeckel, of Halfpenny Lane Old Saybrook, dies Tuesday August 16, 2016, surrounded by her family and friends. She is the wife Thomas E. Haeckel. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland on November 15, 1957. Daughter of Pearl Kogut of Old Saybrook and the late James Taplin. Shirley was the owner of the Highliner II Cafe in Westbrook since 2008 and formally worked at the Cherrystone Restaurant in Old Lyme. Although known as an astute and successful businesswomen, she will be better remembered as a loyal, compassionate, and generous friend with a ready smile and an interest in always doing the right thing. She loved warm weather, a beach in Florida, and her many great friends. She will be sorely missed. Her quote when she graduated high school was "Grow up to do the things you want to do not the things people tell you to do" She did that!!! Besides her husband and mother she is survived by two sons, Justin (Carly) Falla of Fort Lauderdale Florida and Connor McCall of Old Saybrook. Also survived by two stepsons, Stephen (Kelly) and David (Jenny) Haeckel. Survived by two sisters, Moira Hughes of Scotland and Helen Davis of Montville. Predeceased by her sister Lourranie Eldridge. Also survived by dreariest friend Marian O'Brien and by 3 grandchildren. She leaves many friends and relatives. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Carl Swan at the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Rd. Old Saybrook. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday August 19 from 4-7pm. A Celebration of Shirley's life will be held at the Westbrook Elks Lodge, Seaside Ave., Westbrook on Friday August 26 from 1-6pm. Donations can be made out to the Lustgarten Foundation.
