It is with great sadness the family of Shirley Harris Hastman announces her passing on September 2, 2017 after a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Shirley was born on January 27, 1934 in Akron, OH. She was a resident of New Orleans for over 40 years where she worked for The City planning Commission and The Department of Safety and Permits before retiring to Diamondhead, MS.



Shirley was a member Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and served in many leadership roles including her role as the first woman president of Missouri Synod Lutheran Church. She was also on the board of Peace Lake Towers and Lutheran Home.



Shirley is preceded in death by her husband and best friend of 62 years, Leo A. Hastman; Her parents, Daniel J. Harris and Nona J. Nicholas; her sister, Myra Joan Harris and her granddaughter, Jamie Lynn Hartfield.



Survived by her sister Barbara Jean Nicholas.



Shirley was the dear mother of Karen Sue Hartfield (James), Deanna Joan Blank (Ferrell), Andrea Jean Hastman and Gretchen Ann Nestler. Loving grandmother of Thomas Hartfield, Kathryn Hartfield, Mark Adam, Christopher Bergeron, Amanda Holloway and Jonathan Bergeron. She was blessed with twelve great grandchildren.



Special thanks to the wonderful administration and staff at Bayside Healthcare Center, Compassus Hospice, The Camelia Unit staff at Dunbar Village in Bay St. Louis, MS. and June Ledet for many years of love and compassion for Shirley.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, at 12 pm on Thursday, September 7, 2017. Visitation will begin at 10am.
